SEL Spotlight - Mr. Sam Batchelder

Sam Batchelder aka Mr. B, is an amazing young professional who is making a real difference in the lives of Poquonock School students as a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) specialist. Mr. B is incredibly passionate about helping all Poquonock students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to succeed in school and in life. He is also dedicated to creating a safe and supportive environment for students in his small group sessions.

Mr. B has many strengths, some of which are his unique ability to make personal and inspiring connections with Poquonock students. Each day, they show up eager to wave hi or say hello to Mr. B. They do this because he takes the time to listen to their individual dreams, goals, hopes, funny stories, strengths, and challenges.

Mr. B also assists Poquonock staff with meaningful student support and by pushing into classrooms to deliver short Second Step lessons, a comprehensive SEL program that teaches students the skills they need to manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions. He makes the lessons interactive and engaging, and his students look forward to them every week.

In addition to the aforementioned, Mr. B's dedication to his students extends beyond the classroom. He runs some of the best student lunch bunches in the school, where he provides a safe and supportive space for students to connect with one another and discuss their feelings and experiences over food. He is a positive role model and the Poquonock school community is beyond grateful for all that he has done to help play a vital part in supporting teachers daily and helping  students grow.

Mr. Batchelder is a shining example of what a great SEL specialist can be. His dedication, compassion, and commitment to his students' well-being and success are truly inspiring. In his own words "I love being at Poquonock. I love supporting our hard working teachers and staff. And most importantly, I love being a kind and supportive person to all Poquonock students and families."
