This morning, Windsor Public Schools hosted its September Coffee Talk with Superintendent Dr. Terrell Hill, drawing a standing-room-only crowd to āThe Bean,ā a beloved community coffee shop. Known as the heart of the town, The Bean provided the perfect atmosphere for meaningful dialogue, reflection, and collaboration as community members came together to discuss Windsor Public Schoolsā commitment to safety and excellence.

Families, staff, and community leaders gathered to address a topic thatās always at the forefront: the safety of our students and staff. This conversation followed the recent lockdown at Windsor High School, which drew heightened concern due to a tragic school shooting in Georgia just a day earlier. Dr. Hill, as always, approached the discussion with transparency, accountability, and a deep sense of responsibility toward the well-being of the entire Windsor community.

āWe understand that safety is paramount. We take every precaution and make sure we are doing everything possible to keep our students and staff secure,ā said Dr. Hill, whose unwavering focus on student and staff security continues to guide his leadership.
What made this Coffee Talk unique was the diverse group of attendees, including Angela Hernandez, a retired New York City Police Officer; a school shooting survivor and licensed professional counselor; a current Windsor Police Officer, and parent of Windsor High School students; along with Board of Education President David Furie, and retired police captain Kelvan Kearse, head of school safety. Their shared experiences brought a fresh perspective to the discussion, enhancing the districtās plan to improve real-time communication during crises.

Angela Hernandez highlighted the importance of compliance with the districtās requests during emergencies, explaining from her experience as a first responder how traffic and large crowds can hinder emergency response efforts. This insight was met with appreciation from families, who voiced their support for the districtās proactive approach.
The conversation reflected a deep sense of community as families and officials worked together to ensure positive outcomes. Dr. Hillās plan to incorporate immediate and clear communication with families during times of crisis was well-received, with families offering additional suggestions for the district to review.
