At Windsor Public Schools, our nationally recognized Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program thrives because of one essential ingredient: collaboration. The partnership between SEL Specialists and classroom teachers seamlessly blends social-emotional learning with academic lessons, creating a powerful dual impact on student growth.
Using the districtās Instructional Core Wheel as a guide, SEL push-ins promote meaningful experiences that benefit both students and educators. These sessions are designed to enhance studentsā emotional intelligence while simultaneously reinforcing critical academic skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication.

Recently, I had the privilege of observing one of these dynamic sessions at Clover Street School, led by Mr. Morgan, SEL Specialist, and Mrs. Sumner, a dedicated 4th-grade teacher. The two masterfully crafted a hands-on learning experience that exemplified the magic of SEL integration.
The students participated in a captivating activity called āBrick by Brick.ā The task was simple yet profound: an āarchitectā had to verbally guide two ābuildersā in assembling a structure using LEGO bricksāwithout being able to see what the builders were doing, as a partition separated them. Both groups were given identical sets of LEGO pieces, but success hinged on precise communication and collaboration.
What unfolded was a joyful, laughter-filled environment where students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Leadership naturally emerged among students as they navigated the challenge, fostering a deeper understanding of how to express ideas clearly and respectfully while building stronger peer-to-peer bonds.
Beyond the fun and excitement, this lesson showcased the immense value of SEL push-ins. Through activities like āBrick by Brick,ā students not only build tangible skills like communication and leadership but also strengthen their emotional resilience and ability to collaborate ā essential life skills for future success.
These moments of intentional connection and engagement underscore why Windsor Public Schoolsā SEL program continues to be a national model. When SEL skills are intertwined with academic learning, the result is a win-win for everyone involved: empowered students, inspired educators, and a thriving school community.
Our work in SEL push-ins reminds us that learning is not just about facts and figures ā itās about developing the whole child, nurturing their genius, and preparing them to excel both academically and socially. And thatās where the magic happens.
