SEL day ‘25

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) remains at the heart of transforming district culture at Windsor Public Schools, equipping students with the emotional intelligence and skills needed to thrive both academically and in life. Under the leadership of Dr. Michael Mallery—a Louisiana native whose southern charm is matched only by his passion for the work—SEL has flourished across the district. Appointed by Superintendent Dr. Terrell Hill four years ago to lead this charge, Dr. Mallery has been relentless in his commitment to this mission.

Mallery ‘25
To know Dr. Mallery is to know a charismatic leader who puts people first. It is no surprise that the work has taken off the way it has—his ability to elevate culture stems from his deep belief in the work, the people behind it, and his dedication to understanding Windsor’s unique and vibrant community. His leadership has not only made Windsor a statewide leader in SEL but has also garnered national attention for the district’s approach to fostering student success through social-emotional learning.

SEL in Action: Transforming School Culture

The SEL Team across Windsor Public Schools is fostering environments where students can thrive by learning how to manage their emotions, build relationships, and navigate challenges with resilience. Here’s a look at how they’re making a lasting impact in their schools:

Sam Batchelder
Poquonock School: Mr. Sam Batchelder (Mr. B)

At Poquonock School, SEL Specialist Mr. Sam Batchelder, also known as Mr. B, ensures that students are supported emotionally and socially every day. Whether he’s pushing into classrooms to deliver interactive SEL lessons on emotional regulation using Second Step or leading lunch bunches where students gather to talk about their experiences, Mr. B is always present to guide students through challenges. His approachable nature and ability to connect with students help them build emotional resilience and create a safe, supportive environment for learning.

Chris Williams
Oliver Ellsworth School: Chris Williams

Similarly, at Oliver Ellsworth School, SEL Specialist Chris Williams works hard to make SEL an integral part of the school day. Mr. Williams’s lunch bunches provide students with a space to express their feelings, learn to empathize with others, and practice effective communication. Through push-in lessons, Mr. Williams helps students develop skills like self-awareness and decision-making. His constant presence throughout the school makes SEL an accessible and ongoing part of students’ everyday experiences.

MorganClover Street School: Damion Morgan

At Clover Street School, SEL Specialist Damion Morgan uses creative methods to engage students in SEL. By incorporating Legos into his lessons, Mr. Morgan teaches key SEL skills like listening, teamwork, and patience in a fun and interactive way. His activities give students the opportunity to build strong social connections and practice conflict resolution in a hands-on environment. Mr. Morgan’s work in classrooms and during small group sessions makes SEL enjoyable while teaching students the tools they need to manage emotions and communicate effectively.

Kotler John F. Kennedy School: Elyssa Kotler

Her small group sessions are filled with encouragement and laughter as she helps students reframe challenges and focus on solutions. By creating an open, supportive environment, Ms. Kotler empowers students to navigate their emotions, build resilience, and develop meaningful connections with others. She also conducts check-ins with parents to celebrate progress and share moments of growth, reinforcing the partnership between school and home.

Ms. Beatty’s work with peer mediations encourages students to resolve conflicts peacefully and practice problem-solving together. Her lunch bunches offer a safe space for students to share their feelings, build trust, and foster relationships. She also helps students navigate the complexities of social media, promoting responsible decision-making and digital communication. Her efforts help students gain skills to manage their emotions and interactions in a variety of environments.

Together, Ms. Gutierrez and Ms. Shaw create a supportive environment where students are empowered to learn from mistakes and grow both emotionally and academically.

A Community Committed to SEL

Across Windsor Schools, the SEL team—working in collaboration with district administration and teachers—has cultivated environments where students feel supported, heard, and empowered. The district’s SEL approach is more than just a program; it’s a way of being. Windsor Public Schools continues to set the standard for social-emotional learning, proving that when students are equipped with the right skills, they can thrive in all aspects of life.

Under the steadfast leadership of Dr. Mallery and his team, Windsor’s SEL efforts are not just making a difference locally but are also serving as a model for schools across the country. Because in Windsor, SEL isn’t just something we do—it’s who we are.
